A group of parents, former parents, and alumni of Colegio Sagrados Corazones de Valparaíso came together for a choral project to honor the memory and work of Father Esteban Gumucio sscc. On Friday, July 22, the group performed a recital of 11 pieces in the sacristy of the sscc Church in Valparaíso, featuring original texts by "Tata Esteban" set to music by Los Perales and Fernando Leiva, as well as an absolute premiere: "Ofertorio de Esteban," composed especially for the occasion by Pablo Roncagliolo.
The choir, made up of 18 members —6 sopranos, 9 altos, 2 tenors, and 2 basses— is directed by teacher Alonso Ramírez. Instrumental accompaniment was provided by Carlos Ramírez on strings, Gabriel Ramírez on cajón peruano, and Pablo Roncagliolo himself on transverse flute.
The repertoire performed included pieces such as "El Peregrino de Emaús," "Eres," "Amigo de Publicanos," and "Envíanos Señor," alongside the newly premiered work mentioned above.
Cristian, one of the initiative's members, explained the purpose of the project: "We took 11 songs with texts by Father Esteban, set to music by Los Perales, others by Fernando Leiva, and one unpublished song by Pablo Roncagliolo, and the idea is to recover the poetry — in this context of celebrating Father Esteban — to put it at the service of the community, so that people can get to know such a great pastor and poet."
On the choir's makeup, he added: "There are 18 of us, and we have four voices: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass, and the director is teacher Alonso Ramírez."
Those present took an active part in the event and expressed their gratitude for the occasion, which allowed many to draw a little closer to the spiritual and poetic legacy of Father Esteban Gumucio.
