In recent days the second largest city in Mozambique, Beira, has been 90% destroyed by Cyclone Idai as it passed over the country. Some 200 people have lost their lives in Southwest Africa.
Fortunately, our sscc brothers are well, although the communities have suffered different forms of material damage as you will see. Our sscc sisters have not been directly affected by the cyclone, since they live in an area that escaped most of the destructive force of the cyclone. Thank God, again.
The Superior General received a message from the Provincial of Africa, Jean-Bosco Elumba, which included a text by Fr. Corneille Kipulu who lives in Marera. The text reads as follows:
"Terrible cyclone, from Thursday at 2 am until today ... The TV room, the dining room, the kitchen, the two bathrooms above, the rooms of Germán and Richard were all flooded with water, that needing constant draining. Fr. Germán, has been on the go all the time until now, bailing out water. The ceilings of the school, the girls' bedroom, the office, the kitchen and one of the classrooms were blown away, and trees fell, though thank goodness without causing too much damage. We haven’t been able to follow up with Beira, as the city was left without electricity and without means of communication, including the internet. I am still trying to contact them."
