David de la Torre sscc: “Democracy is always the way”

On an unusual Palm Sunday, marked by Ecuador’s presidential runoff election, David de la Torre sscc, Auxiliary Bishop of Quito and Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference, made an urgent call for national unity. Amid the tense polarization between current president Daniel Noboa and candidate Luisa González, the prelate urged citizens to reject caudillismo and “totalitarian messianisms,” pointing out that history has shown the failure of such models. In an interview with Teleamazonas, he reaffirmed that “democracy is always the way” and called for the electoral process to be carried out with respect and a strong commitment to the common good.

De la Torre also urged politicians to turn away from selfishness and embrace a true vocation of service. “The first servant must be the President of the Republic,” he stated, emphasizing that governing requires both spirituality and dedication. He encouraged political leaders to sit at the same table, regardless of ideology, to build a more just and united country where the most vulnerable are prioritized. In the event of conflict, he did not rule out the Church’s mediation.
