Deacon ordination of Edgar Pacheco Bárcenas (Mexico)

On 30 September last, Edgar Pacheco Bárcenas sscc was ordained deacon in the Parish of the Precious Blood of Christ in Mexico City. The Eucharist was presided over by Bishop. Carlos Enrique Samaniego, Auxiliary Bishop of Mexico. At the beginning of the celebration, the bishop greeted and thanked Carlos Mendoza (Provincial), the brothers and sisters of the Sacred Hearts, the formators, Edgar's parents and in general the whole community who had accompanied and formed Edgar's vocation over the years.

During his homily, Bishop Carlos recalled that, starting with the bishop, all Christians are servants, bearers of life, particularly today, in environments where there is fear, weeping, sadness and disillusionment due to the effects of pandemics, war, poverty, organised crime and drug trafficking.

The bishop also recalled an anecdote of Pope Paul VI who at the Second Vatican Council had established that all council sessions should begin with a solemn procession that introduced the Gospel. On one occasion, the Pope wanted to bring the Gospel and was immediately told by the master of ceremonies that this was the task of the deacon. The Pope responded by saying that he too was a deacon. And on that occasion, the Pope, the first deacon in the Church, solemnly carried the Gospel. At the end of the ordination ceremony, Bishop Carlos, on his knees, asked for the blessing of the new deacon.

After the Eucharist, a meal was offered in the parish hall of the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Edgar addressed all those present saying that "there are no words to thank God for the grace of this ministry, a great gift that the Church through the laying on of hands of its pastor has given me. This ministry cannot be understood without the community, because it arises in the midst of it and for it. Many thanks to all those who have accompanied me throughout all these years of formation, to those who participated yesterday in one way or another. Don't forget to pray for me, so that the Lord may give me the grace to do what he has entrusted to me.
