On Thursday 13 October, Carlos Cuevas was ordained deacon by Archbishop Víctor Sánchez Espinosa in the parish of San Pedro Apóstol, Cuayuca, Puebla. During his homily, Don Víctor Sánchez recalled what a deacon is consecrated for and asked the community to continue to pray for vocations. He especially greeted the community of the Sacred Hearts who have been his friends for years when he was auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Mexico and thanked them for their presence and service in San Pedro, Cuayuca. He recalled how in the 1990s the brothers came to the City of Puebla to the Parish of Our Lady of Refuge in what was then the outskirts of the city. Over the years the city grew and eight years ago, the brothers told him that they wanted to be closer to the poor and asked him to send them where the Church needed them most.
Bishop Victor offered them two communities. One in the northern highlands and the other in the southern highlands of the state. He asked them to visit them and to choose the one they wanted. They did so and chose the south, the Mixteca poblana. He spoke of how difficult the death of 62 priests due to COVID has been for the Archdiocese. In this sense he valued as a gift from God the witness of a community of at least three brothers serving in the poorest parish of the Archdiocese.
At the end of the celebration, Carlos Cuevas thanked all those who helped him discover the God of life and mercy: his formators and friends in Mexico and Chile, the Sacred Hearts, his family and the parishes of the Precious Blood of Christ and Saint Pedro Cuayuca where he has learned to be a disciple, listening and serving over the past years.
Afterwards a meal was held in the centre of the town, in front of the parish church, with over 450 people in attendance, including parishioners from the parish of the Precious Blood of Christ, Sacred Hearts, Holy Trinity and St. Isidore parishes, deanery fathers, Carlos' family, brothers and sisters of the Sacred Hearts.
