The Canonical Visit of the brothers’ General Government to the Province of Indonesia ended on Tuesday 8 September 2015. On their last day in Indonesia, Alberto Toutin and Javier Álvarez-Ossorio had the joy to end the visit with the celebration of 50 years of profession of Martin Irawan, the first Indonesian SSCC vocation; therefore it is the first time that an Indonesian SSCC brother celebrates his Golden Jubilee as a religious!
During the nearly five-week long visit to the archipelago, the visitors had visited the islands of Singapore, Batam, Bangka, Java, and Sumatra, and acquired a first-hand experience of the people and life in this far eastern mission area that was started by our Dutch missionaries with the arrival of five Sacred Hearts confreres on the island of Bangka in August 1924: Gerardus Jeanson (43), Marcellinus van Soest (30), Theodosius Herckenrath (38), Isfried Meijer (31), and Antonius Bruijns (23).
Since then, the mission has grown into one with 56 local members today. At the moment there are still three Dutch missionaries in the Province: Ludwinus van Dongen (93), Anthony Hutjes (79) and Jan Heuts (Januar Husada -77). In nine years’ time the Indonesian Province will celebrate the centenary of SSCC presence there.
