Celebrating 90 years since the arrival of the Spanish sscc brothers in Brazil

At the end of July, the Parish of Our Lady of Destierro, Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) celebrated the 90th anniversary of the arrival of the Spanish brothers of the Congregation in Brazil and their presence in the parish.
For this feast they had organised a preparatory triduum. On the 27th the Mass was presided over by Fr. Geraldo sscc. On the 28th Fr. João Lucas, sscc, parish priest and son of this parish, presided. On the 29th the Mass was presided over by Fr. Osvânio sscc, provincial superior. On the 30th, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta, O.Cist., Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro led the Eucharist.
The ceremony was marked by a spirit of gratitude for the years of generous dedication of the Congregation in the parish. Rafael Azanza sscc and Fr. Vicente Hernandez sscc, the two Spaniards still living in Brazil, were present.
In 1932 the province of Spain sent a group of 5 religious to a new mission in South America. On their way to the new mission the confreres stopped in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In Rio they visited the archbishop of the city, Cardinal Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra, who was enthusiastic about the work of the enthronement and invited the brothers to stay in Brazil. The Dutch brothers were already present in Brazil. The Cardinal wrote to the General Government of the Congregation asking for authorisation. With the positive response, the group began its apostolic work in Brazil.
