Just a few hours after his ordination to the priesthood, Fr. Gaberieli Saunivalu sscc, celebrated his first Mass in English on Saturday, December 6, at Queen of Peace Church in Harlingen, Texas. The celebration was accompanied by the pastor, Fr. Bob Charlton, ss.cc., who in his homily invited the faithful to delve deeply into the Word of God in order to allow inner transformation, and reflected on the call to conversion in preparation for the coming of Christ. He also highlighted the nuptial dimension of the priesthood, reminding the community that Fr. Gaberieli is called to live a relationship of mutual self-giving with the communities of Queen of Peace and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The Mass included the participation of Fr. Lui Voreqe, ss.cc., also originally from Fiji, who served as master of ceremonies, as well as a choir directed by Brother Nez that contributed to an atmosphere of prayer and solemnity.
After the celebration, a festive reception took place at St. Anthony Church, with a Western theme, where food, entertainment, and an emotional video with greetings sent from Namosi by Fr. Gaberieli’s parents were shared. Among those present, the participation of youth from both parishes stood out, along with the cultural gesture of the salusalu presented by his niece Monica. The community expressed its joy and prayers for the new priest, affectionately calling him “Saka” and “Turaga”, titles of respect in Fijian.
