Global Meeting of SSCC Communicators in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

On 30 September 2026, the Global Meeting of SSCC Communicators was held online, organized by Noemí García sscc and Fernando Cordero sscc. About fifty brothers, sisters and lay people of the Congregation involved in communication work in different areas took part.

The meeting opened with a prayer centered on the two images, or ways of loving, proposed by Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas: the tower of Babel and the rebuilding of Jerusalem. With them, the aim was to present communication as a task of communion rather than domination.

Next, journalist Emili Pacheco García gave the talk "Communication in the Age of AI: Between Truth and Image." Pacheco has 25 years of experience, mostly in radio, and holds a master's degree in journalism and digital communication from the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). He is currently Media Delegate of the Diocese of Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona).

The talk was organized in three parts. The first was the use of images. Pacheco recalled their power to capture attention and aid understanding, but also the importance of respecting copyright and knowing licenses such as Creative Commons. He warned that media outlets, and even dioceses, have received claims from law firms representing international photographers. He added that informed consent must be obtained when using images of people.

The second part dealt with fake news and disinformation. He presented fact-checking platforms such as RTVE Verifica, Newtral, Maldita.es and Verificat, and highlighted the value of media literacy, with initiatives such as the workshops run by the Col·legi de Periodistas de Catalunya in classrooms and with older people. As a worrying development, he noted that since early 2025 Meta has replaced its fact-checking system with so-called "community notes."

The third part was artificial intelligence, with its opportunities in efficiency and creativity and its risks: bias, disinformation and lack of transparency in algorithms. Here, Pacheco focused on Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical of Leo XIV, presented on 25 May 2026. He recalled its warning against a "technological Babel," its insistence that AI is not neutral, and its call to "disarm" it of logics of domination and exclusion. He also stressed that digital tools must always serve human dignity and the common good.

After the talk there was a time for dialogue in which participants put questions to the speaker on preventing fake news, applying discernment to proclaim the potential of the Gospel, and the dignity of the poor in communication. Translation was provided by Jean Blaise Mwanda, María García Olloqui and Raúl Valverde, which allowed participants to follow in English, French and Spanish.
