Ludru (India)

A 5 hour drive from Bhubaneswar (Odisha) is the Parish of St. Damien in Ludru, consisting of eleven villages, where a total of 116 Catholic families, live peacefully with Hindus and Protestants. Ludru was evangelised for the first time in 1957 by the missionary priests (Vincentians).

Since 2016 our Congregation has been present with two sscc brothers who serve this parish community and visit the villages by bicycle. The local language is Oriya. From 25 to 27 September, Thomas Sukotriraharjo and Fernando Cordero met with the two brothers and had a community meeting, as well as being present at some of the celebrations in the life of the parish. On Sunday, 25 September, the visitors participated in a 3-hour Eucharist, which began with a procession with songs and dances. On the same day they were able to visit the 11 villages, pray with some of the sick, see how the construction of the village chapels was progressing, etc.  Sunday ended with a cultural programme containing lots of songs and dances.

This presence of the Congregation stands out on account of its being located in a very poor place where people, dedicated to agriculture and cattle farming, live their faith in a lively and committed way.
