Meeting of the Superior Generals of 4 Religious Congregations

On Monday, June 15, a meeting of the Superior Generals and a General Councilor from 4 religious congregations took place at the SSCC General House on Via Rivarone (Rome). The Marianists (André Fétis and Jérôme Balakiema), Brothers of Ploërmel (Hervé Zamor and Jean-Paul Peuzé), Assumptionists (Benoit Bigard), and Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Alberto Toutin and Jean Blaise Mwanda).

The topics discussed: the international community (GG, mission and IF) and the intervention capacity of the General Government.

Several foundational questions were raised:

  • What do we do with diversity so that it becomes a creative tension rather than a fracture that risks creating a federation of groups within the same congregation?
  • How do we develop a common charismatic language and lived experience within our congregations that integrates cultural diversity without breaking the common sense of belonging to the congregation?
  • How do we prepare the brothers and the communities that send them?
  • How do we prepare the brothers and the communities that receive them?
  • How do we prepare our brothers for this international dimension of our congregations?

The IF is and remains the privileged place for the transmission of the charism and the sense of belonging. It is becoming increasingly interdependent and intercultural. The fruits are openness to internationality and dialogue between continents, the preparation of resource persons at the service of the body, and a charism rooted in the past yet turned toward the future.

Regarding the intervention capacity of the General Government, the focus is on working with major superiors to share a common vision and strengthen the sense of collegiality. Frequent meetings with them are recommended, as well as involving them in the various commissions of the congregation. Since the General Government has a global vision of the congregation, it must be proactive for the good of the mission.
