New book recalls St. Damien De Veuster

“Catholic churches of Hawaii - A shoal of faith” is the title of a book that has recently been published in Hawaii [Mutual Publishing].  The book is co-written by Evan A. Ponton and Philip H. Scharper Jr. and is illustrated by Tara J. Hannon. The book profiles all of the 94 Catholic churches in Hawaii, from the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace to small churches hidden in missions. The 165 pages gives a summary of each church, along with colour photos, drawings and watercolours.

The stories are simple and similar. In the case of the early churches, these were the fruits of the dedication and selfless efforts of the missionaries of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts. The authors have documented their work around Saint Damien De Veuster, Saint Marianne Cope and Brother Joseph Dutton. Ponton explains how he wanted to "know more about the land and people that shaped them into the extraordinary saints that they are."
