Fr. Brian Vincenzo Guerrini sscc, from the U.S. West Region, has published a new book offering a detailed chronology of the missionary work of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts (SSCC) in countries outside Europe, from 1819 to the present.
The book, titled “The Sacred Hearts (SSCC) Missionary Story: Beyond France and Europe”, was developed after research in the Archives of the Brothers’ General House in Rome. It includes key dates, foundations, profiles of notable missionaries, historical images, statistics, and stories such as the near-cancellation of the first mission to the Sandwich Islands (Hawai‘i).
Highlights include:
-
The first SSCC missionaries arrived in the U.S. in 1830.
-
In 1834, they co-founded the first higher education school in California.
-
In the following decades, missions were established in Asia Minor, Africa, and Oceania.
“My aim was to offer a chronological and geographical overview of our missions outside Europe, contributing to the historical memory of our Congregation,” says the author.
