Visit of the new Cardinal Celestino Aós to the General House (Rome)
Archbishop Celestino Aós Braco of Santiago, Chile, visited the General House on 26 November, two days before his creation as a cardinal by Pope Francis. Friar Celestino, of the Capuchin order, with this appointment will be the eighth cardinal from the Church of Chile and the second appointed by Pope Francis for this country. The new cardinal gladly accepted the invitation of our Superior General, Alberto Toutin, to visit the ss.cc. community in the General House and share a meal with the brothers. He was accompanied by Fr. Andrés Ferrada, from Chile, an official of the Congregation of the Clergy. The Archbishop of Santiago was not expecting this appointment from the Holy Father, with whom he has already had an audience. In fact, he learned of the news through a phone call from his sister in Spain. He is at ease, because it was not something he wanted. "If God wanted it, it would be for a reason. He is living this moment with great simplicity and highlights the need for dialogue in this present time.
The Superior General together with the General Archivist, Éric Hernout, handed over a copy of a letter from the President of Chile from 1837 addressed to Fr. Crisóstomo Liausu and which expressed his joy at the foundation of the first school of the Congregation in Valparaiso. He also handed over another letter from the Archbishop of Santiago, Rafael Valentin Valdivieso, addressed to the Superior General, Bishop Rafael Bonamie ss.cc., dated August 27, 1848.
