When Vatican II reminded us of the Universal Call to Holiness, it was truly updating the Gospel. (Lumen Gentium 39-42). When Saint John Paul II reformed the process for the canonization of saints, he explicitly began with this document of Vatican II. True to the Gospel, the Church is holy. Our Constitutions and our Rule of Life, within the life of the Church, are founded on this call to holiness: “All are called to holiness, all who accept baptism are intended to reach perfection.” (RL #70)
And so to launch the Postulation focus on our SSCC web site on the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul is appropriate. Both Peter and Paul handed on God’s call to holiness and saw it intimately tied to the mission of the Church; and Paul calls the Corinthians : “…those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints,…” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Peter still using the word “call,” identifies his community as “…a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9).
May Augustine’s word be our focus: “Be who you are.”
