Opening of Novitiate in the Region of India (Brs)

The first novitiate in the Region of India opened in Bhubaneswar in the State of Odisha on August 5, 2014.  Four young men were accepted as novices during the ritual mass of initiation in the Damien Chapel of our Pabitra Hrudaya Sangha Residence.  The four novices are: L. Arockia Gavaskar, Rajat Kumar Nayak, Thomas Nand and J. Arockia Kulandai.

The celebration began with the blessing and rededication of our house, which has been renovated, followed by the Eucharist. It was heartening to have a simple presence of our Sacred Hearts family of Brothers and Sisters from Bangalore, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar who were able to grace the occasion. Thanks to the Regional Government for their presence and their fraternal support to the new community of brothers in the Novitiate who began their formative spiritual pilgrimage.  The novitiate of our four novices will be one full canonical year culminating in the temporary profession in the first week of August in 2015.

Both Fr. Alexis Nayak (Novice Master) and Fr. Patrick Crowley (Assistant) form the Novitiate formation team to accompany the four novices. Fr. Patrick Crowley is arriving into Bhubaneswar on the 8th of August 2014 to join the Novitiate community. We are extremely happy to have him with us who will share his vast experience of religious and spiritual life not only with the Novitiate community but also with the SS.CC. Brothers and Sisters in India.  Thanks for his availability and thanks to the USA West delegation for sacrificing him for the Indian mission.

The opening of the novitiate is the result of a process of discernment which had begun some years ago when the Region of India was still sending its novices to the CAP (Conference Asia-Polynesia) international novitiate in Manila.  However, due to some practical reasons and difficulties, and above all, to do the novitiate formation in our own Indian cultural context, the decision was made to establish a novitiate in India  and the request was made to the General Government for the same.  With the consent of his General Council, in their session of March 14, 2013, Fr. Javier Alvarez – Ossorio, the Superior General formally erected the novitiate house in: Pabitra Hrudaya Sangha Residence, N/6 – 465, IRC Village, Bhubaneswar – 751015, Khurda District, Odisha, India.

To keep the international dimension of our formation, a 6 months program for the preparation of the final vows for all the brothers of CAP will start in 2016.

The new novitiate in India is a sign of growth of the Congregation in India. There is no doubt that the former East-Coast Province and now the US Province, and the fraternal support and solidarity of our international communities world-wide have played a significant role in this growth process. We thank God for our vocational growth and thank our Brothers and Sisters around the world for that. Today we have begun this important spiritual pilgrimage, and we know where we are going, but there will always be uncertainties about how to get there. Therefore, please pray for us as we set out in this formative journey.  Thanking you for your support and prayers!
