Ordination of deacon of Óscar Casanova, sscc (Chile)

On Sunday, 3rd March, our brother Óscar Casanova, was ordained deacon in a very moving celebration that took place in our SSCC College in Manquehue (Chile).

As Monsignor Pedro Ossandón stated in his homily, the Church that Oscar knows comes from his experience of his parents and his grandmother. There was also excitement at such a moment taking place at time when, as the bishop said, "the church is being purified."  The Eucharist was imbued with prophetic readings: Isaiah: "Break the chains, untie the cord of the yoke, let the oppressed free"; or Psalm 71: "in his days justice shall flourish and peace till the moon fails."

Monsignor Pedro Ossandón in his homily commented on part of the preparation involved in this day: "Oscar is preparing to celebrate the sacraments. He will be a agent of communion and an evangelizer of the good news of the gospel, of solidarity, a person committed to the kingdom of God and justice. Oscar dreams of a just world, a fraternal world where no one lacks bread. Thank you, Oscar, because you are good news at this time of the Church. You are humbly offering to serve in a church that is being purified, and you come without wishing to impose on anyone nor believing that you can save anything.  You will be someone who testifies to the Christian life and your faith in Jesus Christ, a person of fraternal communion.  People will be happy to meet you because you have the charism of the Sacred Hearts that makes us all one family.  You will be a servant of the people, renewing yourself in the Eucharist, in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, He who gave us justice and peace. May the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to make you a good, strong person, who, united to Jesus Christ, will change history ".

Óscar Casanova:

"Thanks to the people who called me and who will support me"

Oscar's thanksgiving focused on revealing the importance of the faithful gathered in community, a source of hope in the current times of the Church:  "There is still hope that fills me with much enthusiasm and joy; seeing the people gathered here sharing this day gives me a lot of hope. The memory I have of the church with my grandmother, with my parents, makes me feel accompanied, not only by those known to me, but by an ongoing presence that is shown in each face. We wanted this ordination to take place at the end of the Youth Pastoral Formation programme because what happens here is not an isolated event, but one that originates in the strength that is to be found in community life, in the lives of people. This weekend in particular, I was able to celebrate life with the young people. What is happening today arises from the experience of a young Church, of a Church that continues to renew itself despite the pain, the frustration and the many occasions of shame.  And in spite of that, I still believe that it is possible to transform the Church itself. I thank God for the dream that allows me to continue believing that it is possible to be a disciple of Jesus and be a servant. It is a longing shared with others that excites me and drives me, and I am sure that this will sustain me when I feel weak. Thank you Lord, thank you. And thank you to his people who called me and who will support me."
