Pilgrim of the Sacred Heart (France)

Pilgrim of the Sacred Heart' is a co-production directed by Bruno Aguila, featuring several sscc brothers of the Province of France and some magnificent images of Picpus. It was broadcast on June 7 on KTO TV, to mark the occasion of the Solemnity of the Heart of Jesus.

“When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out” (Jn 19:32-34). If this wound opened access to the heart of Christ, it also gave rise to devotion to the Sacred Heart. This is the subject of this documentary, which attempts to understand a reality as vast as it is diverse, permeating faith, the history of the Church and the history of France. The cult of the Sacred Heart was incorporated into the liturgy quite late, in the 18th century. The French school of spirituality, with St. John Eudes in particular, and also Marguerite-Marie Alacoque and the Jesuits, actively contributed to its evolution.

How did affirmation of the centrality of the Sacred Heart place love at the heart of faith? How was this evolution able to reject the heretical temptations of rationalism, Jansenism and Calvinism? What are the links between this devotion and the appreciation of Mercy described by St. Faustina? To answer these questions, the film team visited several places emblematic of this spirituality of the Heart of Christ, such as Montmartre, Paray-le-Monial, Cholet, Picpus...
