Priestly Ordination of Lalit Toppo (India)

Brother Lalit Toppo was ordained a priest on Friday, May 3, 2019 at his home parish, Gholeng, Chattishgarh along with another friend of his who belongs to the Congregation of the Society of Jesus. Bishop Emmanuel Kerketta, DD, Bishop of Jashpur Diocese, ordained them. More than seventy five priests, many religious sisters and about four thousand people gathered for the celebration. Seven SSCC brothers from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata attended the ordination on behalf of the Congregation.

A day prior to the ordination Brother Lalit went through the  “Haldi Ceremony” according to the custom of the place. This is a custom which signifies purification before entering into a major passage of life. On the eve of his ordination, he was taken in procession by the family and relatives with dancing with traditional drum beats to the parish church where he was received by the parish priest. After the ordination concluded, he was once again brought back to the house in the same fashion to celebrate his Thanksgiving Mass the next day. The family and the whole village prepared everything for the celebration. All three days were marked with drum beats, traditional dancing, singing and sharing of meals.

It was a beautiful celebration with traditional symbols, decorations and cultural practices. Bishop Emmanuel stressed the importance of connecting in life, that is, connecting discipleship as a priest to the real life. Fr. Lalit thanked everyone for their support in his journey of life which has made it possible to receive the blessing of priesthood. Congratulations to him as he begins a new life.

The Region of India gives thanks to God for the gift of what was the 24th Ordination to the priesthood.
