The challenge of accompanying migrants (Chile)

Elías Lara, an SSCC formation student, was invited by Conferre to speak about his experience of being in the far north of Chile with around 500 people who had entered the country illegally.  He carried each of their stories in his heart.

"I have in my heart each of the stories and the suffering that their migration entailed. I have the memory of seeing many running through the desert. I have seen people arrive who were dehydrated, sunburnt and hungry or affected by high altitude. I remember each and every one of the children waiting for me to give them a word of encouragement, some joyful that this odyssey has ended. I have in my mind the desperation of those who are losing hope, those whose opportunities are running out, those who are trapped in the streets of Iquique. Although our Church is doing everything possible, the daily demand of migration is much greater", said our brother Elías, after returning from nine days spent by him in the north, the scene of a brutal migration crisis affecting the country. He saw for himself families entering the country illegally.
