Ukrainian refugees in El Escorial (Ibérica)

From 25 April to Sunday 8 May, the Congregation has given some space in the Retreat House in El Escorial (Madrid) to house 39 Ukrainian refugee women and children. The Madrid NGO Rescate has been in charge of accompanying the families and organising the stay in collaboration with the staff of the Casa San José.

The Ukrainian families come from different cities in Ukraine, occupied or threatened by Russian troops. They managed to flee to Warsaw where they stayed in a refugee camp with thousands of other people. A network of NGOs managed to charter a flight from Warsaw to Madrid bringing 200 people to Spain: 39 of them were posted here. Within a few days, the NGO Rescate managed to find enough families in the Madrid area willing to take them all into their homes. According to the workers and volunteers, they felt very much at home in our San José house: the regularity of the meals, the park, the tranquillity and the security of the environment were very good for them. Most of them had been in shelters in Ukraine for months, plus a short time in the camp in Warsaw. They said that the first night spent here was the first real sleep they had had in a long time.
