From 26 to 30 September, Thomas Sukotriraharjo and Fernando Cordero made a canonical visit to Bhubaneswar and to the community that is responsible for the Damien Social Development Institute (DSDI) and the Coudrin hostel for young students, albeit with few resources. The visitors, accompanied by the brothers of the community, visited several of the projects run by the DSDI: mostly non-formal education centres, where they were able to encourage students and teachers in their educational work. They also visited leprosy colonies and learned about the health commitment of this institute, which clearly follows in the footsteps of Saint Damien of Molokai. This community carries out a great work of human and social promotion in an environment that is exclusively poor and populated mostly by Hindu residents. There is no lack of educational activities in the different areas, such as health or the promotion of women.
After several decades of existence since it was founded by Fr Bill Petrie, the brothers continue to renew their commitment with new projects and a passionate dedication to the cause of the poorest. For example, they are looking to modernise the machines of the Aymer loom, which is intended to provide employment for women through the production of thread towels. There are also plans to develop new health projects. The visitors also met with each of the brothers and held a community meeting, during which they encouraged them to continue their dialogue, discerning together in this work in which teamwork is very necessary.
