Bro. Patrick Hughes, ss.cc. of the community at St. Patrick Monastery passed away this morning (June 15th) in Honolulu, HI after an extended illness. Bro. Patrick celebrated his 93rd birthday on June 10th, and his 73rd anniversary of profession this year.
"Brother Patrick was raised in Waikiki where St. Augustine Church was a familiar place while he was growing up. He spoke fondly of Waikiki.
He did his novitiate in Belgium; lived in Washington; and was assigned to Kalaupapa for 16 years where he was known fondly by the patients, especially Kenzo who he went fishing with a lot. He constantly shared his memories of those glorious days.
Brother Patrick was a cook at St. Patrick's Monastery for over 30 years. He loved his ministry to the community and was loved by all, especially the diocesan and religious priests with whom he played cards. He built community around his ministry and would always encourage the local vocations to persevere.
A comment he made to a former Provincial Superior: 'You may have all the power in the world, but if you don't have charity you will not be a successful as a leader.'
Bro. Patrick Hughes, ss.cc. will be truly missed. May he rest in peace."
