“All to God, all for God” (Good Mother)

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the early morning of Tuesday, January 19, 2010, Our Lord called Sr. Rose Kathleen Lenchanko, ss.cc. to be with Him in eternal glory. Fr. George Busto, of the Franciscan Hospice care had administered the Sacrament of the Sick on the afternoon of Monday, January 18 and Sister Rose Kathleen went peacefully in her sleep.

Sr. Rose Kathleen was born on March 4, 1928 the youngest girl of a family of 11 children. Her parents, Niketa and Parascovia Lenchanko, escaped from Kiev in the Ukraine with three small brothers. They escaped through Mongolia in an ox-cart just as the Czar was closing all frontiers to keep people from emigrating. Her parents somehow made their way to Valdivostok and then came by ship to the Islands by way of Japan arriving in Honolulu in 1912. They had planned to go to California or Australia but remained here in the Islands where five other brothers and two sisters were born. Sr. Rose Kathleen grew up understanding Russian and even praying in Russian but soon learned English in the public school for the first and second grades then enrolled at St. Theresa’s school where she was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet whom she loved and to whom she credits her missionary calling. Sister graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy in 1946, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Dayton and a Master in Education from Mt. Saint Mary’s in California. It was our ministry of adoration that drew her to enter the Sacred Hearts Congregation on September 26, 1947 at Nuuanu. Sr. Rose Kathleen made her first profession on April 22, 1950 and had the singular privilege of having our Mother General – the Zenaide Lorier receive her vows here in Hawaii! Sister made her final vows on July 26, 1953.

Sister Rose Kathleen was a talented and efficient person whose talents in translation and administrative affairs was a gift for the Pacific Province and the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts. In her religious life she served as teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy, and at Bishop Amat High in La Puente, California. Than in 1972 to 1978 she realized her dream of serving in the mission and was sent to Ecuador where she served as superior at Rumipamba where she was able to work more closely with the poor. She organized a kindergarten in a poverty-stricken area which has since been expanded to a day care center and dispensary.

In 1977 Sister was asked to help with communications in Rome. She spent many years in Rome as General Councilor and then as General Secretary of the Congregation. Her skill in languages, French, Spanish, Italian, helped her to know the Congregation on a worldwide level and the intricacies of dealing with Vatican curia and Italian officials.

On her return to Hawaii in 1994 she worked to renovate St. Anthony Retreat Center into a modern and beautiful facility for retreatants who came from Hawaii and the mainland. She said in her interview with Me Ka Ohana, our provincial bulletin, that she found it most inspiring to see how so many in our secularized world are hungering for God ans seeking Him in prayer.

Sister was 81 years old and would have celebrated her 60th anniversary as a Sister of the Sacred Hearts this year.

We thank the Sacred Hearts for the gift of Sister Rose Kathleen and we ask you to remember her in your prayers.
