Perpetual profession and diaconal ordination of Suraj K. Sonwani sscc

On the feast of Saint Damien, Suraj Kumar, sscc, made his perpetual profession. The following day he was ordained a deacon. The celebrations took place in the Formation House in Dangadighila (Kolkota). For this, a “shamiana” (a temporary structure made of bamboo and cloths) was erected on the lawn at the entrance to the house. Suraj's family and some members of his parish came from Malkharoda (Chhattisgarh).

In the late afternoon, sscc brothers and sisters, Suraj's family and friends, members of neighbouring religious communities and Christians from around the area, gathered to celebrate  the Eucharist, presided over by the Regional Superior, Ajith Kumar Antony Dass, during which  Suraj made his final profession.

The month of May in this part of India is normally very hot and without rain. With climate change, the threat of rain became a reality at the start of the ordination celebrations scheduled for the next morning. Luckily it only lasted for a moment. The Archbishop of Calcutta, Thomas D'Souza, as always close and friendly, presided over the Eucharist. The archbishop laid his hands on Suraj for a long moment of silent prayer. After the consecration prayer, the parish priest of Suraj, Fr. Thomas Lourd (Diocese of Raipur), helped the new deacon to put on his dalmatic.

The Christian families of Bara Bagan, located close to the house of formation, in addition to livening up the celebrations with their songs, prepared various songs and dances, which together with other presentations by sscc brothers and sisters, relatives and friends of Suraj, made up a lively program of performances, culminating in a wonderful meal and, of course, more traditional dances.
