Visit to Diego de Almagro (Chile)

From 6 to 9 July Jean Blaise Mwanda and Fernando Cordero visited the community of Diego de Almagro, in the Atacama Desert, in the north of Chile. The community undertakes intense pastoral work, living in an emergency house alongside the most disadvantaged population. In addition to the Parish of the Holy Spirit, which has an active pastoral council, they are involved in other surrounding villages taking into account the present needs of the Diocese of Copiapó. Formation of the laity in leadership is a priority.

The people live of the mines. In 2015 a landslide wiped out part of the town. Six people died in Diego de Almagro, while in other towns the number of deaths was higher. The deluge destroyed the railway line.

On 8 July, Our Lady of Carmel was processed to the Curro, with religious dances and the celebration of the Eucharist. On 9 July, Fr. Fernando was interviewed about the Synod on the Radio Bahia programme "Aclaró".

At the end of the visit the diocesan bishop, the Mercedarian Ricardo Morales, shared his vision of the diocese, his experience of the community of Diego de Almagro and his first two years at the head of the Diocese of Copiapó. He finished by thanking the SSCC for their presence here.
