«The Music of Damien’s World ! About a Saint and a Musical Score. »
On Saturday, May 9 in Leuven, a choir sang the religious songs used in Hawaii and Molokai at the time of Father Damien.
A few months ago, the officials of Damien Center in Leuven discovered in a box, among other objects, a booklet of Latin and Hawaiian chants. This booklet was in very poor condition. The officials had this booklet restored.
On the eve of the Feast of Saint Damien, the choir "Camerata Aetas Nova" staged their interpretation these songs in a concert. There were about 150 people gathered in the premises of KADOC (Documentation and Research Centre for Religion, Culture and Society ) in Leuven to listen to this unique delivery of high quality music.
The Latin and Hawaiian songs were presented by Ruben Boon, the head of the Damien Center, during the course of the celebration.
At the end of the concert, there was an exhibition of the restored manuscript as well as other documents and books, including four books on loan from the Archives of the SSCC General House in Rome.
The proceeds of the concert, around 1000 euros, was donated to the organization "De Stem van ons geheugen" that minister for the people with dementia.
