Archaeology and historical geography of the Bible

Sumit Nayak sscc is in Jerusalem taking part in a course on the Bible in the Holy Land. He shares his experience with us:

“The Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome) offers a course on the Archaeology and History of the Bible in the Holy Land from 2 September to 29 September 2025. This program focuses on the archaeology and geography essential for understanding the Old and New Testaments, blending lectures with field visits to significant sites in and around Jerusalem, such as the Holy Sepulchre, Mount Sion, and the City of David, as well as locations like Bethlehem, Masada, and Jericho. A week's trip to Galilee includes visits to sites like Nazareth, Capernaum, and Megiddo.

The course aims to help us critically engage with fundamental themes and equip us with the basic tools needed to evaluate the impact of archaeology and geography on the interpretation of the Bible. The course has allowed me to delve into the Biblical text like never before. As I explore these sites, I discover how each passage of the Bible resonates with the history and culture of the land I am walking through, creating a vivid connection between the past and the present. This immersive experience promises to deepen my appreciation of the Biblical text and enrich my spiritual journey.”
