Initial Formation in India (Brothers)

The initial formation in India has three stages: prenovitiate, with a period of “candidacy” as its first part; novitiate as the second one; and theologate or professed stage as the third one. They are three distinct parts of the same journey towards sscc religious (priestly) life.

They are located in three different places: for the first stage of candidates and prenovices the formation house is in Bangalore, at the recently inaugurated “St. Damien`s Seminary”. The novitiate will start at “Damien Residence”, at Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar. After novitiate students go for one year pastoral experience, which we call Regency, which takes place in different places. The formation house for the professed takes place now at Serampore, a city close by Kolkata, where the sscc community runs a parish. However, a new house is being constructed closer to the Regional Seminary of West Bengal, where our brothers study theology. We hope to inaugurate the house in a few months.

At present we have 27 seminarians in Bangalore: 6 pre novices who are in their final year of philosophy and bachelor degree studies; 7 who are doing their second year of the same study; and 4 doing their first year of the same studies. There are 10 candidates who are the newest addition to Damien Seminary in Bangalore; these new comers are given special training in English and basic catechism for one year and then they are send for studies in the college seminary nearby. We have three staff in our Damien Seminary: Fr. Santhosh (rector and local superior), Fr. Michael Shanahan and J. Michael (deacon) as assistants.

Our novitiate is a new reality for us and for the Congregation. It will be erected in 2014, having Fr. Alexis Nayak as novice master. Alexis is now taking a special course in Pune for his preparation as novice master.

This year there are 3 professed brothers doing their “regency” in three different places.

In Serampore we have 4 theologians: one in his final year, 2 in third year and 1 in second year. Fr. Ajith KumarAntonydass is the superior and formator of our juniors or professed brothers.

Currently there are 3 deacons (J. Micheal Kumar, Radhelal Jatwar and Umakanta) who will receive their ordinations as priests in the next months.

We have an Initial Formation Commission with Fr. Santhosh as the coordinator. Fr. Bibudha Nayak (in charge of Vocation Ministry) and Fr. Ajith  are members to the commission. In the future, Alexis will join this commission. We meet at least twice a year to plan our formation, to share and support each other in the ministry.
