Twelve days in Kalaupapa: a spiritual retreat amid history, faith, and service

Father Chris Santangelo sscc, shared with the brothers of the U.S. Province a transformative experience during his recent twelve-day stay in Kalaupapa, Moloka‘i. Despite his initial hesitation, he responded to the call to provide pastoral care to a community deeply marked by the legacy of Saints Damien and Marianne Cope, who dedicated their lives to caring for patients with Hansen’s Disease (leprosy).

During his visit, he joined the Franciscan sisters who continue to care for the few patients still living in the historic exile colony. He participated in a moving ceremony organized by the National Park Service, placing traditional Hawaiian leis on the graves of those who died in this sacred place.

Over the course of these days, he celebrated Masses, visited historical sites such as St. Philomena Church in Kalawao, and deeply reflected on the possibility of retiring in this environment filled with spirituality, silence, and memory.

His account stands as a testimony of faith, living history, and the power of responding to the call to serve—even in the most remote places.
