In gratitude we commemorate the life of

Fr. Sjef Verhoeven ss.cc.

Sjef (Martinus Josephus) was born in Gemert on March 11th, 1924. On 25 September 1945 he joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in New Ginneken. On October 1st, 1950 he was ordained in Broekhem.

Sjef’s first task of missionary work in Mozambique was a pioneering one together with Stef Driessen. He stood up for minorities, who were not accepted by the Government, and after four years he went back to the Netherlands. This was a huge disappointment for him.

He then had a period of several appointments in the Netherlands and Portugal. Eventually he found his footings again when he was appointed by Mgr. Buy to Brazil in 1968. He received several nominations, including episcopal vicar in the pilgrimage town of Maria Aparecida. He continued to work in Brazil until 1988.

After that, he returned to the Netherlands and became a pastor of the Saint Andreas parish in Heerlen. He was very popular with the youth.

In 1993 he became a member of the community of Sint-Oedenrode, and joined them when the community moved to Den Bosch. In recent years he lived in Teteringen. Eventually he stayed in Zorgcentrum Zuiderhout where he received a tender loving care. There he passed away on the 18th of April.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Zorgcentrum Zuiderhout, Arnold Janssen Avenue 46 in Teteringen. The burial will take place in the cemetery of the Congregation at the Zuylen cemetery, Garden View Avenue 11, Breda. There is also opportunity to offer condolences.
